Start with the noise filter that already ships inside your meeting app, and only add a separate tool if you can name a specific problem the built-in one fails to solve. That is the short answer, and for most people working from a reasonably quiet room it is also the final one. The longer answer matters if you take calls from a kitchen, a shared office, or a street-facing apartment, because that is where the differences between the two approaches start to show.
What the built-in filters actually do
Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Webex all include noise suppression that runs on your outgoing microphone signal before it leaves your computer. Most of them offer some kind of strength setting, often with an automatic mode that decides how aggressive to be based on what it hears. The filter is tuned by the same company that tunes the echo cancellation and the voice codec, so the pieces are designed to work together.
The practical advantages are easy to list. There is nothing to install, nothing to keep updated separately, and nothing for your IT department to approve. The filter uses your processor sparingly because the vendor has every incentive to keep the whole app light. And if something sounds wrong, there is only one place to look.
The limits are just as clear. The setting applies only inside that one app. If you hop between three platforms in a day, you have three filters with three different personalities, and your voice will sound slightly different on each. You also get little control beyond a few levels, and you usually cannot hear the processed result yourself without recording a test.
What a dedicated app changes
A standalone noise removal tool sits between your physical microphone and every program that wants to use it. It typically creates a virtual microphone; you select that virtual device in Zoom, Teams or anything else, and the cleaned signal flows through. Some tools also process incoming sound, which means you can clean up a noisy colleague on your end even if they do nothing.
This design buys consistency. One filter, one set of preferences, the same result in a meeting app, a screen recorder and a voice chat. Dedicated tools also tend to offer a monitoring or preview option so you can hear what others hear. If you have a supported graphics card, hardware-accelerated options exist as well; NVIDIA Broadcast, for example, requires an RTX-class GPU and shifts the work off the main processor.
The costs are real, though. A virtual device is another link in the chain, and every link is a place where the wrong input can be selected after an update or a reboot. Processing takes resources, which an older laptop running screen share and a dozen browser tabs may not have to spare. And on a managed work computer, you may simply not be allowed to install it.
The double-processing trap
The most common mistake is running both at full strength. When an external tool has already stripped the noise and the meeting app then applies its own aggressive filter to the result, speech can turn thin, clipped or underwater-sounding, with the ends of words cut off. The second filter is hunting for noise that no longer exists and starts nibbling at your voice instead.

Mixed answers usually mean trying the built-in option for a week first and noting every time someone comments on your sound.
Test before you trust either one
Whatever you choose, make a short recording while producing your typical noise: type, run the tap, play a radio quietly behind you. Listen back on headphones. You are checking two things, whether the noise has gone and whether your voice still sounds like you. A filter that removes the dog but makes you sound like a bad phone line has not solved the problem, only changed it. Pick the setup that passes both checks with the fewest moving parts.
